When building your transmission, it is imperative to upgrade your intermediate shaft. The stock shaft is designed for stock power levels, plain and simple. Further, when you upgrade the transmission with an upgraded torque converter and billet input and output shafts, all of a sudden the intermediate shaft becomes the weak link. When the time comes that your weak link breaks, it will typically destroy many other components in the transmission at the same time. Don't let your intermediate shaft be your weak link, leave that to a u-joint or something not so catastrophic when it fails.
